Essential Oils

Essential oils (EO) have been used for many purposes through the ages. The ancient Egyptians used them for healing and embalming. They were also put in the tombs of the Pharaohs for their journey in the afterlife.

The healing power of the essential oils was so well known and valued, that when the tombs of the pharaohs were plundered, the thieves often took the oils in preference to the gold.

You probably have already come across essential oils as some are used for perfumes, cosmetics, fragrances, cooking and cleaning products.

Until recently, EOs were predominantly used by aromatherapists for healing purposes, but over the last 30 years they have become increasingly popular with the general public as a self-help tool for healing the body and mind.

EOs are made by plants to either attract insects for their pollination or to protect the plants from diseases, so many have antimicrobial properties. This means they are anti-viral, anti-bacterial, antiparasitic as well as anti-fungal. They have shown to be very helpful in healing the microbiota in the gut.

EOs are absorbed through the nose into the olfactory gland, which is situated inside of the brain (yellow part, see picture). That is why they can have a profound effect on the state of mind.

Some oils have a calming effect, others help with focussing and there are also oils that have an uplifting effect. The great thing is that they act very quickly, i.e. in as little as 20 seconds.

When put in a diffuser, it can help children with getting in the right state for doing homework or getting ready for sleep.
